What is Bonsai?

Many different things are understood by the term 'bonsai', but strictly speaking, according to oriental tradition, bonsai is an art form in which a small tree is transformed by human intervention so that it complements its container and recreates, in minaturem the appearance of a mature tree in the wild.

There are various ways of achieving this - for instance, by pruning the branches in a particular way. And just as the appearance of trees in the wild will vary in different regions of the world, so bonsai in different countries can be adapted so that they conform to characteristic local growth patterns.

The equivalent chinese term for these miniature trees is "penjin". According to the much older chinese tradition the tree is allowed to grow more freely, and can be permitted to adopt a very eccentric growth habit. In Japan, however, the various styles of bonsai are subject to strict rules that have to be carefully observed; bonsai trees are even catorgorised according to size.

The great majority of Western growers have followed the Japanese tradition (the word 'bonsai' comes from Japanese). So although this miniature art form originated in china, Western knowledge of the subject comes from Japan, and Western methods are much closer to the Japanese than the Chinese tradition. Western growers will therefore generally adopt the Japanese styles, and these in turn provide the most useful models for beginners to follow.

Bonsai, just like painting, sculpture or even poetry, can only become a true art form when you have perfected the various pratical skills, and developed the necessary creative and artistic sensibilities. But bonsai, unlike other art forms, is never finished, because the plants continue to grow.
