The Bonsai Container
The bonsai container and the tree should form a single, harmonious whole. For instance, the container should be proportionate in size to the crown, its shape should suit that of the tree, and the glazed surfaces should not be conspicuous. Here are a few simple rules to help you choose the right container: * You cannot expect a bonsai and its container to complement one another properly until the bonsai is fully mature. So while the plant is in the early stages of growth, keep it in a comparatively large container that has simple a design as possible. The bonsai will develop faster in this kind of enviroment. * In a fully developed bonsai, the depth of the container should equal the width of the base of the trunk. One notable exception to this is the cascade-style bonsai, which should always be placed in a much deeper container. * The container should be shaped so that the rim lies more or less beneath the outer edge of the crown, and the diameter of the container should be less than the height of the tree - ideally, in fact, it should be about two-thirds the height of the tree. * The colours and oatterns in the glaze should either be repeated in the colours of the tree, or at the very least match those of the tree. * Chose a round or oval container for a tree with soft outlines, and a rectangular for a tree with a more sharply defined habit. |
